The Charles Peet Dawes collection comprises around 2200 glass plate negatives from the last years of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th.
Charlie Dawes photographed the people and communities of the Hokianga at a time when the area was at the centre of New Zealand’s timber industry, and before the arrival of cars and intensive farming.
The collection includes many formal portraits, but more importantly Dawes often captured his neighbours informally at work and at play, for example at Kohukohu and Rawene.
